[성명] WCRP 항의성명

Your Excellency:

On behalf of the World Conference of Religions for Peace (WCRP), the largest international multireligious organization affiliated to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, I write to respectfully protest in the strongest terms any decision to build a nuclear waste disposal facility near the Won Buddhist Holy Land.

The Won Buddhist Holy Land is sacred to Won Buddhists. It is the site of the Enlightenment of Master Sotaesan. Moreover, the Won Buddhist Holy Land is also recognized by and important to religious believers of different faiths around the world. Indeed, the Won Buddhist community frequently hosts international multireligious gatherings of very senior religious leaders on its Holy Land.

Religious freedom is protected in Korea. Any reasonable person can understand that a decision to build a nuclear waste disposal facility near an internationally recognized Holy Site is an insult and injures the dignity of the related religious community. More, it is a profound insult to all good religious people around the world.

Senior most religious leaders here in the United States and around the world are fully aware of the current plans to build the waste disposal facility and protest them in the strongest terms. Protect the dignity of this Holy Land and do not go forward with the building of the nuclear waste disposal plant. There are other sites in South Korea that do not involve abusing the rights and sensitivities of religious people.

Please take the appropriate action to protect the dignity of the Won Buddhist Holy Land.

WCRP(세계종교평화회의)는 세계의 주요한 종교 지도자들에 의해 설립된 가장 큰 국제종교조직입니다. 저는 WCRP(세계종교평화회의)를 대표해서 원불교 성지 근처에 핵폐기장을 건설하려는 그 어떤 결정에도 반대한다는 뜻을 정중하게 표합니다.

원불교성지는 소태산 대종사의 대각지(大覺地)로서 원불교인들에게 신성한 곳입니다. 더불어 원불교성지는 세계각지의 다른 종교인들에게도 대단히 중요한 곳으로 알려져 있습니다. 원불교는 이 성지에서 유력 종교지도자들과 함께 국제적인 종교행사를 치루곤 합니다.

한국은 종교적 자유가 보장되는 곳입니다. 이성이 있는 사람이라면 세계적인 종교성지 부근에 핵폐기장을 건설하려는 계획이 종교계의 위엄을 실추시키는 것임을 이해할 수 있을 것입니다. 이울러 이러한 행위는 세계의 모든 종교인들에 대한 심각한 모욕이 아닐 수 없습니다.

세계각지와 미국에 있는 모든 유력 종교지도자들은 현재 핵폐기장 건설계획을 완전히 알고 있으며 강력하게 항의합니다. 핵폐기장 건설계획을 포기하고 성지의 위엄을 보호해야 합니다. 한국에는 성지를 훼손하지 않는 또다른 많은 적지가 있습니다.

청컨대, 원불교 성지의 신성함을 보호하기 위한 적절한 조치를 취해주시기 바랍니다.
결론적으로 WCRP 종교지도자들은 핵폐기물에 의해 제기된 이번 사안에 대해 (한국정부에) 지속가능한 무공해 에너지의 개발을 요청합니다.

WCRP(세계종교평화회의) 사무총장인 윌리엄 벤들리 박사는 11일 원불교 영산성지에 핵폐기장을 건설하려는 계획에 항의하여 성명을 발표했다. WCRP는 UN 산하 경제·사회 평의회에 가맹된 가장 큰 국제종교조직이다.

벤들리 총장은 “원불교 영산성지는 국제종교회의가 주기적으로 열리는 등 원불교인들 뿐만 아니라 세계 모든 종교인들에게도 중요한 곳”이라 밝히고 “이곳에 핵폐기장을 건설하려는 것은 세계의 모든 종교인에 대한 모독”이라며 이 계획의 취소를 요구했다.

벤들리 총장은 성명발표 후 11일 서한을 노무현 대통령, 윤진식 산업자원부장관, 정동락 한수원사장, 박태영 전남도지사, 김봉열 영광군수, 강필구 영광군의회의장에게 보냈다.
